Bat & bird trail

Situated off the south-east shore of the city, Elephanta Island is a good birding location. During this season one can see Brown-headed Gull and Black-headed Gull flying alongside boats to the island. Other birds like the Gull-billed Tern, Lesser and Greater Sand Plover, Indian Grey Hornbill, Common Iora, Spot-billed Duck, Little Grebe, Osprey, and White-bellied Sea Eagle can be spotted here. BNHS also gives you an opportunity to learn more about the only flying mammal on this Island. Explore the caves with an expert in search of bat roosts of the Greater Asiatic Yellow House Bat and Leaf-nose Bat. Grade: Moderate (Initially, 100 steps climb to reach the top, this could be a bit strenuous) Reporting: Hornbill House, opp. Lion Gate, Colaba at 7:30 a.m. Please carry packed breakfast, hat/cap and adequate water. The boat journey to reach Elephanta island should take 45 min each way.
